Is the Peloton Bike Worth the Cost?

So, you keep hearing about this Peloton bike and now your interest is peaked. What is that Peloton anyways? Well, the Peloton bike is a high-quality home exercise bike that offers the convenience of working out at home (no place safer right now), but instead of just pedaling away to your favorite music on Spotify or Apple Music, Peloton connects you to  either live or on-demand workouts and instructors. This in turn allows you to work out in that in-class setting which is highly motivating for some, but also allows you to stay anonymous and sweat away at home away from prying eyes, which is motivating for others. Win-win if you ask me!

Another great thing about Peloton is that the bike keeps a record of all of your rides and your metrics. These include each ride’s output, your heart-rate, miles ridden, and your place on the leaderboard. With over one million subscribers to the Peloton community, you will definitely feel like you are part of an awesome and supportive community.

Is the Peloton Worth it?

Here is where you will need to take a deep and honest look into your motivation and workout history. Are you the type of person who is crazy about trends, but then finds yourself being bored after a few months? Are you the type of person who is rarely motivated to workout but loves the idea of it more than the actual act of it? Do you often buy expensive workout equipment that quickly becomes a really expensive clothes rack and dust collector? Peloton may not be for you.

However, if you love the idea of a global workout community with highly motivating instructors, amazing music, and intense workout sessions that leave you dripping in sweat from the comfort of your own home - this may be the exact thing you have been waiting for. The monthly subscription gives you unlimited access to thousands of workouts including rides, strength training, cardio, yoga, palates, barre, and even outdoor classes like walks and runs. You also have the option of working out with an instructor and group of individuals through a live session with an active leaderboard OR you can ride to a huge selection of on-demand classes that also have an active leaderboard and an “all-time” leaderboard to help keep you motivated. Last, with the newest feature, you can schedule a ride with all of your friends and host your own ride party. Everyone clicks on the session and rides at the same time. The leaderboard is limited to just your group. How fun is that?

Cost aside, if you loved spin classes pre-COVID era, this may be a fabulous option for you. (Although, honestly speaking, I never took a spin class before the Peloton bike… nor really rode a stationary bike and I LOVE the bike). Also, if you are a busy mom who would love the convenience of working out from home when you have a spare 20 minutes, this is an awesome option. I have been able to workout so much more from home than I was ever able to at the gym. Another great thing is that I can now work out in the morning! My husband leaves the house about an hour before I wake up and I have never had the option to workout in the morning. Now, I can hop on the bike early in the morning while my kiddo is sound asleep in bed. However, If you are an avid bicyclist and rarely ride to an instructor and just want a high tech stationary bike - this may not be for you. The cost would just not be cost effective and there are better alternatives out there for you.

Bottom Line:

If the cost doesn’t scare you, you are motivated to workout at least 3-4 times a week, are motivated by instructors and a community of people to rally behind you, you love music and the flexibility of working our from home - this bike is for you!

Happy Riding!
